Trials and tribulations... in food. [13 May 2009|08:30pm]
So, as everyone on here knows, or should know, I will eat pretty much everything. And, in fact, I enjoy pretty much all of that everything. There are a *very* few number of foods that I will eat and then be unhappy about eating them. This is why ordering at a restaurant is so difficult for me. I like all the food, and I know that I will be happy with whatever I get, but I still try to pick what I want *most*. Anyway, the very few number of foods that I don't like, it's not due to their tastes. In fact, I don't know what they taste like, really. The reason I don't like them is very simple. The moment I put them into my mouth, I start to retch. I can suppress this reflex and choke them down while looking like I enjoy them in certain circumstances (read: I ordered something that had them in it at a small restaurant, or was served it at someone's house). However, this is not a pleasant experience. Know what the kicker is? They're relatively mundane japanese foods, which are in abundance here though they are not in everything like some foods.

The first of these foods that I realized I cannot eat is "Satoimo". Now, this is a small potato-type thing that is put into soup in the wintertime here in japan. It is strange to have a soup for school lunch without these potato-things in it during the winter. It's got a knobby dirty exterior, and the inside looks a bit marbled, if you cross-section it. If you've guessed what these things are called in English, give yourself a gold star. Satoimo are more commonly known as "taro" in English speaking places. I don't know why I can't eat them, but I can't.

The second of these foods is "tarako". Tarako is a type of fish roe and is the most common roe you can find in Japan. This stuff is all over the place. You go to a supermarket, and there's shelves of it. It's one of the most common onigiri (rice ball) filling out there, right after umeboshi (which I don't especially like, but can eat). Tarako is essentially super-tiny fish eggs inside a casing of some sort, like sausage but with fish eggs. This is how it is sold. It is sometimes put on spaghetti and you get "tarako spaghetti". Tarako is made of fail. Or, perhaps I am made of fail, as tarako is the only kind of fish eggs that I have encountered that I absolutely cannot eat. It's super terrible. It has a slightly spicy taste... but that's all I can really provide on the taste front because my brain shuts down when I eat it and focuses on trying to keep everything else I've eaten down. It's not a good time.

So, there you have it. The two foods, thus far, that I cannot eat for fear of being sick all over the table. Tarako has the added benefit of making me feel like I have food poisoning for the next 2 or 3 days, so, bonus points to tarako. Yay. Also, Taro chips, I can eat. Weird.

So, it's 1AM. I've been packing all night. And cleaning. And making my apartment straight. I'll be in NYC around 5:30PM on Saturnday, if all goes well. See you there.

Tick. Tick. Ti-*smash* [03 Nov 2008|09:10pm]
So. I need a new alarm clock. I cannot stand anything that ticks when I'm trying to go to sleep. It *really* irritates me. In fact, if I'm just around, I cannot have anything ticking or else it drives me nuts. When I got here, there was a ticky clock left from the prior JET. I used it for about 2 or 3 weeks before I got tired of its incessant ticking. Since then, I have used an alarm program for my computer. It has worked supremely well up until now. Until now, that is, because I have just moved my laptop from my bedroom to the desk in the other room in an attempt to fix my posture and free up a wall outlet for a heater. So, unless I want to shuffle my laptop back and forth between rooms every night, I need to come up with a new method of waking myself. Tomorrow, I shall go on a trek to find an alarm clock, among other things. Will I be successful? Only the Shadow knows.

I'm curious to know what people think.

The Final Countdown [14 Jun 2008|03:09pm]
So, I know that I'm really terrible at keeping people in livejournal land updated about the goings-on in my life. However, time is growing short for me, and I thought that I should let people know. If you are in the rochester area, you have two days left to see me. I finish on monday the 16th of june and am heading home immediately following my defense. Those in the new york city area, You have 41 Days left to see me. After this time, I will cease to exist. I'm sorry, but my time in this land will have expired :(

I'm sad about this, but I've come to accept it. I hope that all of you will as well. The way it stands now, unless something really major happens, the end of July is it. But hey, I love all of you dearly and Hope to see as much of you as I can.

And then I go to Japan for a year! Wheee!!

...What? You thought I was dying or something? sheesh. ;)

I'm teaching english in Japan in Chiba-ken via the JET program for at least one year. After that, who knows? We'll see, shall we?

*hugs and love*

In Honour of the day [13 Jun 2008|02:50pm]
Truly, This is my favourite day of the year. Or, one of my favourites. Not June the thirteenth, no. But, any Friday the thirteenth is indeed my favourite. The superstition surround the day is immense, and I enjoy disbelieving it. However, there's always a part of me, deep down, that has the innate fear in its tiny grasp. This, is why I leave you with the immortal words of Vincent Price...

Darkness Falls Across The Land;
The Midnite Hour Is Close At Hand.
Creatures Crawl In Search Of Blood
To Terrorize Your Neighbourhood.
And Whosoever Shall Be Found
Without The Soul For Getting Down
Must Stand And Face The Hounds Of Hell
And Rot Inside A Corpse's Shell.
The Foulest Stench Is In The Air,
The Funk Of Forty Thousand Years,
And Grizzy Ghouls From Every Tomb
Are Closing In To Seal Your Doom.

I bid you, adieu.

...or did he? [16 Nov 2007|05:01pm]
Guy 1: Some dude tried to break in last night at like 2am, but I was on the comp and it's like right beside the window so I heard the faggot.

Guy 1: Anyways, I grabbed the folding chair and as soon as he was like halfway through I beat the fucking shit out of him.

Guy 1: So he's laying here unconscious and I call the cops. Once they get here, they search him and look at what he fucking had:

Guy 1: 8 track tape (unlabeled), Flashlight (no batteries), Half eaten box of Fig Newtons, Measuring tape, Instructions to "Monopoly."

Guy 2: Dude, you fucking killed McGuyver!

What... What is this? [31 Mar 2007|12:33am]
Found this on the net, Regarding 300:

"I haven't seen it yet because I was banned from my cineplex. We had all lined up in front of the theater for about 30 minutes, and then they brought us in. I had to stand right beside these two fat, horse-faced lesbians eating each other's tongues like they were making a political statement or something. So, like 30 minutes later, we end up shuffling in the theater and these fucking bitches start bitching about having to wait when the movie is about to start, mind you, it was 11 and it was a midnight showing. It turns out they were going to see that stupid Jim Carrey movie 23 and they were missing it. So, the ugliest of the two bitches just exclaims like no one's there, "This is the wrong fucking movie!" I just had to do what I did next. I shouted at the top of my lungs, "This is SPARTA!" and kicked her in the chest, causing her to fall down about 8 steps to the floor. Most were shocked, but about 80% of the theater started to cheer, and I was forcibly thrown out by 2 officers. Charges are going to be pressed against me apparrently, but it was worth it."
